What engines are available for the Chevy Silverado HD?
For the most part, regardless what configuration you choose, both the Silverado 2500HD and the Silverado 3500HD enjoy the same two engine options. To keep it simple, you have a 6.0-liter V8 gas option and a 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 option. The only real restriction for what engine is available on what is that the diesel has limited availability when it comes to the regular cab models. Vortec 6.0-liter V8
The Vortec engine is your gas option. It comes with a 6-speed heavy-duty transmission and it can belt out 360 horsepower along with 380 pound-feet of torque. If you prefer filling up with gas, then this is your option.
Duramax 6.6-liter Turbo-Diesel V8
The Duramax turbo-diesel engine is truly impressive. It generates 445 horsepower and if that wasn’t enough, it’s capable of providing up to 910 pound-feet of torque. It comes with a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission.
How much can each engine tow in the Silverado HD?
The towing for these two impressive engines will depend on your configuration and both the 2500HD and the 3500HD give you different towing numbers. One thing to note is that the gas engine gives you more towing in the 2500HD, but the diesel ranks supreme on the 3500HD. This is due to some packaging and weight differences.
For the gas powerplant, you get up to 14,400 pounds of towing in the 2500HD and 14,200 pounds of towing in the 3500HD when properly equipped. The diesel kicks things up a notch and gives you up to 15,400 pounds in the 2500HD and an insane 23,100 pounds in the 3500HD.
