Is it dangerous to use cruise control in snow?

Cruise control is one of our favorite features on new cars today. It’s just so convenient to flip it on and not have to worry about whether you’ve accidentally started going too fast or too slow when traveling on the highway. That being said, it’s not always advisable to use your cruise control. For one, you probably shouldn’t rely on it in especially busy traffic, but there’s other circumstances as well. If you’re wondering “Is it dangerous to use cruise control in snow?” then you’re in the right place!

Driving in the snow with Cruise Control

Years ago there was a story that went viral about a woman who lost control of her car because she was driving in a rainstorm with her cruise control on. While the story has been highly debated on whether or not it is true, the moral of the story is what really counts. And it’s true: you’re at a greater risk of hydroplaning in slick conditions if you’re using your cruise control instead of controlling the gas pedal yourself.

The same goes for snow. You won’t necessarily worry about hydroplaning like on water, but things like ice, snow, sleet, and black ice all present their own dangers. Every split second when driving can count for a lot, so it’s best to control the gas yourself.

Winter Driving Safety Tips

There’s other things you should be considering when driving around in the snow and winter conditions. People tend to greatly overestimate how much grip their tires have on the road when driving in slick winter conditions. One tip we have — especially for the younger drivers out there — is to not be afraid to miss a turn. If you haven’t had enough time to slow down to safely make a turn, then you should always just give yourself more time and hit the next one.
